Our Grandfather’s Choice To Finish His Life With Grace
At some point our lives must come to an end. For many that means going peacefully in their sleep, or surrounded by family in a hospital room. However, for our grandfather it meant slowly deteriorating under the weight of dementia just as his mother did before him. When he realized the fate that awaited him, he asked us to locate and explain to him his options in regard to the possibility of medical aid in dying (not to be confused with medically assisted suicide; to understand the distinction see our disclaimers page). He did not want to lose his mind. He wanted to end his life gracefully and in peace.
DIGNITAS – A Beacon of Hope
In our search, we eventually discovered DIGNITAS in Switzerland. DIGNITAS is one of the only organizations in the world that allows people from different countries to use its facilities for medical aid in dying.
Once we found this organization, our grandfather asked us to explore their process. As Americans, we found that there was only so much support the Swiss organization could offer us. Our family struggled on our own, seeing doctor after doctor, consulting lawyer after lawyer, until finally, nearly two years later, our grandfather was able to fly to Switzerland and go to DIGNITAS. Founding of Axios Consulting – A Race Against Time
In reflecting on our journey as a family we were troubled with how arduous a process it was and how much anxiety it had given us. This is why we decided to found Axios Consulting, a company dedicated to helping families learn more about their options when faced with a similar situation.
Axios can help you determine if you or your loved one is eligible for DIGNITAS’ services and then help explain to you the available options. Finally, should you decide to move forward with DIGNITAS, Axios will provide a guide who speaks the local language and knows the city well. All this is done so that you and your family can focus on what matters most instead of being burdened with stress and uncertainty like we were. For more questions about our process, see this page.
Following Up
Once Axios receives your information, a representative will review it and follow up with you. Should the Axios team believe that they can be of service to you, this follow up will include setting up a zoom meeting to discuss details about both your situation and Axios’ services. (Of course, once you have submitted a contact form, there is absolutely no obligation for you to go any further in the process: the zoom meeting, potential travel, and especially the utilization of DIGNITAS’ services are entirely up to you and your family.)
